Fire burns tanker laden with 4,695 card readers in Anambra

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has confirmed that a total of 4,695 card readers were destroyed in a fire that affected containers kept at the Anambra State office.

In a press release, Tuesday, by Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, the Commission revealed that it will mop up spare card readers in other states for use in Anambra state as a fall back measure.

INEC said that the development is the third in the past 12 days following similar incidents in Isiala Ngwa and Qua’an Pan Local Government offices in Abia and Plateau States respectively.

The Commission said that while it awaits the details of the latest incident, it notes with some relief that there was no fatality or injury reported just as it also stated that it remains confident that with the steps taken, elections in the state will proceed as scheduled.
