Protest: University of Calabar Suspends Hike In School Fees

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof Florence Obi, has suspended the payment of undergraduate school fees until further notice, following student protests against recent adjustments in fees.

In a statement the university’s Registrar, Gabriel Egbe, on Monday, conveyed the administration’s commitment to addressing students’ concerns.

Egbe assured the students, regarded as crucial stakeholders, that the university’s management is working to find a resolution to the issue.

Students had earlier protested the hike in school fees, emphasising the challenging economic conditions faced by Nigerians.

They expressed concerns that the hike in fees could force some students to drop out of school.

In a previous statement released by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Effiong Eyo, the management explained that the fee adjustment was a response to economic realities.

While arguing that the hike was necessary to uphold the academic standards for which the university is renowned, the statement clarified that the 100 per cent increment would be implemented starting from the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions
