NMA Identifies Challenges faced by Doctors

Many people relocate from Nigeria for various personal reasons, but for most medical doctors, it is more of their job than themselves.

Medical doctors put their lives on the line to save the lives of others, however, these doctors are not having the best of a working environment in Nigeria.

This is why the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Professor Innocent Ujah has lamented that doctors leaving the country is a result of lack of working tools, poor working conditions, and insecurity.

Prof. Ujah said this on Channel Television’s Breakfast Programme, Sunrise Daily yesterday. He explains that doctors move abroad in order to have work equipment for their safety and that of their families.

“Many of the reasons are poor work equipment, insecurity, poor remuneration, and poor equipment to work with. I think these are some of the issues,” he said.

He mentioned that the remuneration in European countries and Saudi Arabia is better than that of Nigeria.

He also said that having a good working environment is very vital since the country has lost 20 doctors due to Covid-19 and the majority of the doctors were being kidnapped.

Ujah estimated that 80 thousand Nigerians have been trained as doctors but only about 40 thousand are at home, he disclosed that over 50 percent of doctors are outside the country.

He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to convene a meeting of stakeholders including agencies and ministries to stem the brain drain affecting the medical sector for the betterment of the country.
