Umar insists on Justice Onnoghen’s appearance at CCT
The Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Danladi Umar has insisted that suspended CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen must appear in person at the next sitting of the Tribunal.
Umar’s comments followed a heated argument which ensued when Justice Walter Onnoghen’s counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo engaged him in a heated argument at the Tribunal.
The altercation began when Mr Umar insisted that proceedings must continue despite agreement by the prosecution lawyer, Aluyu Umar, and Mr Awomolo, that the case be adjourned to a later date in view of some recent developments in the case.
Umar had also directed that Mr Onnoghen appear before the tribunal in person at the next adjourned date.
He said: “Under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), a defendant, who is served with a charge and represented by lawyers, must take his plea before raising any objection.
“The defendant has continued to stay away from this tribunal. I am going to grant this adjournment at the instance of the prosecution and defence, but must state that the defendant must attend court at the next adjourned date so that all the issues would be resolved in his presence.”
