AFCON Draw: Three Strong Teams That May Face Super Eagles

The Super Eagles are hoping to go all the way to win the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) billed for South Africa, but a glimpse into how hard or easy it will be would be known on Tuesday when the draws are conducted.

There is no gainsaying that favourable draws can help teams and when they find themselves in the Group of Death, it can translate to an early exit.

With the seedings for the AFCON Draws already out and the identity of teams in each pot also know, one can take a wild guess about three of the teams that may face Nigeria’s Super Eagles in the Group stage of next year’s AFCON tournament in Cameroon.

THE POTS:

Pot 1: Cameroon, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Nigeria
Pot 2: Egypt, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea
Pot 3: Cape Verde, Gabon, Mauritania, Zimbabwe, Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone
Pot 4: Malawi, Sudan, Comoros, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, The Gambia

Here are Three Teams That May Face Super Eagles

Egypt:

The Pharaohs are one the toughest teams in Pot 2 and they are equally the most successful team in the history of this particular continental football tournament having won seven previous editions.

Even though this Northern African country are far more successful than the Super Eagles in terms of AFCON titles won, Nigeria has the upper hand in the head-to-head in the past AFCON games between the two teams.

In the 10 AFCON games between Nigeria and Egypt, the Pharaohs have managed just three wins while the Eagles have four and the remaining games have ended in draws.

Super Eagles

Ghana

Though the Black Stars have four titles from their participation in AFCON tournaments, they have not won the trophy in 39 years.

Meanwhile, in the 1l previous times, they have to face Nigeria at different editions of the AFCON, the Black Stars claimed victory four times with the Super Eagles snatching three wins. The other four games ended in stalemates.

Ivory Coast

Though Nigeria and Ivory Coast are at par in their previous eight AFCON meetings, with both teams having three wins each and two draws spread over 46 years, the Super Eagles are more successful with their three AFCON titles won in 1980, 1994 and 2013.

It is quite interesting to note that the Super Eagles beat the Elephants as the Ivorian team is called en route to winning 1994 and 2013 AFCON titles in Tunisia and South Africa, respectively.
