EPL: Chelsea overcome Watford to stay top ahead of City, Liverpool

Hakim Ziyech netted the winning goal to ensure Chelsea stayed top of the Premier League with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Watford Wednesday night at Vicarage Road.

The game was temporarily halted after a medical emergency in the stands which saw a Watford fan suffer a cardiac arrest in the Graham Taylor Stand 12 minutes into the match.

Medical staff from both teams raced across the pitch to assist the supporter, who was stabilised and then carried out on a stretcher to be taken to hospital.

When the match resumed it was Chelsea who took the lead, with Mason Mount stroking the ball past Daniel Bachmann in the 30th minute.

However, the visitors’ advantage did not last long and Emmanuel Dennis, who had been a doubt for the fixture, struck the ball into the bottom corner.

In the second half, substitute Ziyech fired past Bachmann from a Mount pass to secure all three points for Chelsea.

Chelsea head to rivals West Ham for a derby at London Stadium, while Watford face another tough test with Manchester City visiting Vicarage Road.

At Goodison Park, Alex Iwobi was rooted to the bench as Liverpool pummeled Everton 4-1 to record yet another Merseyside derby win

Mohamed Salah scored twice in the derby win that has seen Liverpool keep pace with both Chelsea and Man City at the top of the table.

Elsewhere, West Ham settled for a 1-1 draw against Brighton while at St.Mary’s,  Leicester fought back twice to take a point in an entertaining 2-2 draw against Southampton.
