The terror group Boko Haram has killed 43 rice farmers in Zabarmari, a town in Maiduguri, Borno state. The town is famous for rice farming and the huge loss of lives is coming as a shock and a setback to food security and sustenance in the country.
It could be recalled that Boko Haram had in October killed 8 farmers who were working behind the Borno State University.
So far, an estimate of over 30,000 lives had been lost to the terror group since its emergence in 2009 while 2 million people are displaced from their homes.
Reacting to the incident, President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed grief over the killings describing it as “senseless”.
He said, “I condemn the killing of our hardworking farmers by terrorists in Borno state.”
According to information from the Senior Special Assistant to the president on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, President Buhari said the government had given all the needed support to the armed forces “to take all necessary steps to protect the country’s population and its territory.”
