CAF Champions League: Enyimba crash out in Aba

Enyimba have crashed out of the CAF Champions League despite recording a 2-1 win over Sudanese club Al Merrikh on Wednesday.

The People’s Elephant were ousted on a 4-2 aggregate scoreline having lost their first leg tie in Omdurman 3-0 late last year.

Despite needing to upturn a three-goal deficit, Enyimba started on shaky note in Wednesday’s second leg tie as Al Merrikh scored four minutes into the encounter in Aba.

Seif Terry shot the visitors into the lead barely five minutes into the game.

The two-time African champions did pull level 10 minutes after as Victor Mbaoma restored parity in the 14th minute.

Enyimba continued to push for more goals against the Al Merrikh team but they were unsuccessful as the first half ended even at 1-1.

Enyimba came out smoking in the second half and their early pressure paid off as they were awarded a penalty which Mbaoma expertly converted to give the hosts a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute.

However, Enyimba threw all they’ve got at Al Merrikh but they were unable to get the extra goals they required to progress into the lucrative money-spinning group stage.
