WAFU Final: Golden Eaglets lose to Cote d’Ivoire

The Baby Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire have emerged as the new U-17 champions in WAFU Zone B region.

The Ivorians Monday night in Lome, Togo beat Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets 3-2 to claim the regional title.

The Baby Elephants race into the lead just after 15 minutes into the game before they doubled their lead on the hour.

Seydou Traore made it 3-0  in the 84th minute.

Nigeria then mounted a late fightback with substitute striker Ahmed Abdullahi scoring two quickfire goals but it was too little too late for the defending champions.

Earlier in the evening, Burkina Faso’s Baby Etalons, who lost 0-1 to Nigeria in the semi finals, grabbed the tournament’s bronze medals after an 11-10 penalty shoot-out win over Niger Republic following 1-1 draw in the classification match.

Despite Monday’s defeat, the Golden Eaglets have already achieved their primary target of qualifying for the 2021 U17 Africa Cup of Nations holding in Morocco from 13th – 31st March.

The Golden Eaglets’ contingent is expected back in Nigeria on Tuesday.
