Leon Balogun set for new Rangers deal

Scottish giants, Glasgow Rangers is set to offer Super Eagles central defender a bumper package in a ploy to talk the Nigerian into signing a fresh contract that will keep him at Ibrox as they close in on the title.

Balogun earns £12,500-per-week at Ibrox but he is in contention for an increment if he decides to extend his contract which will end this summer.

With Champions League football looming next season, coach Steven Gerard has reiterated his desire to retain the towering defender whose wealth of experience has come in handy for the Ibrox side.

The former Wigan stopper had hit the ground running after joining the club last summer as a free agent, and Gerard has declared in clear terms that securing Balogun’s future for next season would be another added boost to the club in what has been an incredible season.

“We have six centre backs at the moment but that won’t be the case in the summer,” said Gerrard. “Leon has something in his contract that might trigger on its own in the coming weeks. But we don’t have to wait for that because we are really happy with the player and I want him around for next season anyway,” he told Herald.

The 32-year-old centre-back has become the backbone of Gerrard’s first team, having made 15 top-flight appearances in the Scottish Premiership this season.

The Liverpool legend described Balogun as a consistent centre back whose wealth of experience could prove invaluable as they chase both domestic and European success.

“He is an international player, he is very quick, he has got a fantastic profile, a profile that we like in that area, and he has come in and settled in really quickly and put in some real consistent performances.” Gerard to Herald.
