20,000 Nigerian migrants benefited from health assessment in 2021 – IOM

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said on Tuesday that 20,000 migrants benefited from the organisation’s health assessment between January and May, 2021.

Mr. Frantz Celestin IOM’s Chief of Mission disclosed this at a training organised for editors of media houses in Abuja.

He revealed that the migrants who benefited from the assessment were migrating to various countries such as United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.

“One of the functions of the organisation is to support migrants in all ways that we can do under this period of reviews, over 20,000 Nigerian migrants benefited from health assessment.

“Also, in 2020, we conducted 34,000 health assessments for those traveling to the countries mentioned above even at the height of the COVID 19 pandemic.

“We remain committed to helping migrants to migrate through the right procedures and we would keep on enlightened the public on the disadvantages of irregular migration,” he said.

Celestin reinstated the importance of the media in helping with the fight against irregular migration.

“The relevance of media in all aspects of human endeavor cannot be overemphasised especially in the area of better migration management.

“Media engagement is imperative given the pressing need to promote safe and regular migration as well as discourage irregular migration.

“IOM’s role goes hand in hand with a strong and impartial media toward enlightening, mobilising, and sensitising members of the public and stakeholders in this country,” he said.

Celestin noted that maintaining good media relations was indispensable and contribute to the organisation’s daily work. (Agency Report)
