Group Lauds Sanwo-olu Over Appointment Of SSA On Persons With Disabilities

By Samuel Ohwovoriole

Chukwu Chikwado, Executive Director, Disability Rights Action Group ([DRAG), has lauded the Governor of Lagos state, His Excellency, Babanide Sanwoolu over the appointment of Adenike Oyetunde, Senior Special Adviser on persons with disabilities. She stated this in a press statement issued by the group in Lagos Thursday.

She said, the recent appointment of Adenike Dasola Oyetunde as Senior Special Assistant on persons with disability, attests to an increasing awareness on the need for an inclusive society.

“This is indeed work in progress. Establishing government offices to cater for the wellbeing of persons with disability is one thing, and appointing the right people to occupy such offices is another thing.

Looking at the profile of Adenike Oyetunde, one cannot but notice her passion and struggle for the full inclusion and participation of persons with disability in mainstream society. I believe she is going to use her office to call the attention of the governor, to the various disability rights issues affecting the lives of persons with disabilities in the state.”

In her words, “Generally, persons with disabilities are often marginalized and excluded from political and public life. While I congratulate the new appointee, I hope this appointment marks a turnaround for good.”

She used the opportunity to call on other state Governors to emulate Sanwoolu.

“I am also using this opportunity to admonish other state governors to emulate the governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwoolu. As custodians of the people’s mandate, they should actively promote an environment in which persons with disabilities can effectively and fully participate in the conduct of public affairs, without discrimination. Once again, I say a very big congratulations to Ms Adenike Dasola Oyetunde.”

She was full of appreciation for the Lagos State Governor, “On behalf of DRAG, and the entire community of persons with disability in Nigeria, I commend the effort of the Lagos State Government in promoting inclusive governance.
