IPOB member’s interview: FG suspends Channels TV
Reports just reaching our desk indicates that the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has suspended a multiple awards winning television station, Channels Television, over the breach of the Broadcast Code.
The NBC also imposed a fine of N5 million on the station over its interview with a member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in which the subject made some secessionist and inciting comments.
In a letter by its Acting Director General, Dr Armstrong Idachaba, the Commission specifically complained about the Station’s live programme broadcast on Sunday, April 25, 2021.
NBC told the Managing Director of Channels TV that it erred by allowing a leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a body proscribed by a Law Court in Nigeria, to make false and misleading statements about the nation’s security.
Meanwhile a quick check by RovingNaija at the time of filling this report shows that Channels TV is still on air and broadcasting on DStv Channel 420, raising doubts whether the NBC enforced the reported suspension afterall.
