NPFL: Akwa United go top as Enyimba suffer derby defeat
Akwa United have shot to the top spot on the Nigeria Professional Football League table following a narrow 2-1 win over Sunshine Stars in Uyo on Sunday.
Charles Atshimene shot the Promise Keepers in front after 21 minutes of action, while Sadeeq Yusuf equalised for Sunshine Stars 11 minutes later.
Seth Mayi netted the winning goal for the home team in the 72nd minute.
With the maximum point secured from Sunday’s outing, Kennedy Boboye’s men occupy top spot on the table with 37 points from 20 games.
For Sunshine Stars, there awful run continues as they are now without a win in their last 13 games.
Elsewhere, Kano Pillars missed the chance to secure top spot after they conceded a late equaliser in the 1-1 draw against Warri Wolves in Ozoro.
Auwalu Usman put Pillars ahead two minutes before the hour mark, while Mark Daniel levelled scores for Warri Wolves from the spot four minutes from time.
Kwara United dropped to third poistion on the table following a 2-1 defeat to Nasarawa United in Lafia.
Wasiu Alalade’s 90th minute was only a consolation as the Solid Miners picked all three points courtesy of goals from Anas Yusuf in the 48th minute and another from Silas Nwankwo in the 69th minute.
At the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium, Enugu, Rangers trounced Enyimba 2-0 in the Oriental derby.
Both goals came from the spot with Christian Nnaji scoring the first in the 57th minute and Elijah Ani converting the second on 90 minutes.
Heartland recorded the only away win of the day with Kingsley Maduforo scoring the winning goal in the 1-0 victory at Adamawa United.
In Port Harcourt, Sunday Adetunji scored for the second consecutive game as Rivers United beat Dakkada 2-0.
Katsina United recorded the biggest win of the day thrashing Wikki Tourists 5-1 at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium.
