Donald Trump backs President Buhari on Twitter Suspension

The immediate past President of the United States (US), Donald Trump has congratulated Nigeria for suspending the operations of Twitter after the microblogging site deleted the post of President Muhammadu Buhari for breaching its rules.

Trump, in a statement on Tuesday night, commended Nigeria for the action, calling on more countries to “ban Twitter and Facebook for not allowing free and open speech.”

“Who are they to dictate good and evil if they themselves are evil,” he asked, before applauding the action of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“Congratulations to the country of Nigeria, who just banned Twitter because they banned their President.

“More countries should ban Twitter and Facebook for not allowing free and open speech – all voices should be heard,” he said.

He made allusions to a possible ban of the platforms whilst in power but said he balked at the idea because Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, “kept calling me and coming to the White House for dinner…telling me how great I was,” he said.

With over 60 million followers before he was banned for two years, Trump gave the suspension by Nigeria his full backing saying that it will lead to the emergence of more competition in the social media space.

RovingNaija reports that Mr. Trumps angst against the giant social media platforms is not far-fetched after all.

It would be recalled that as the sitting President, Trump incurred the wrath of Facebook and Twitter after the US Capitol riot in January and was subsequently banned by both platforms.

It was alleged that his posts leading to the riot and afterwards fueled the riot.

In Nigeria, the Federal Government had on Friday suspended the operations of Twitter indefinitely due to its use for activities that were capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.

The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension of the micro-blogging social network, days after Twitter deleted a post by President Muhammadu Buhari for violating its policy.
