Euro 2020: Morata fumbles again as Spain lose final ticket to Italy
Alvaro Morata’s penalty miss proved costly on Tuesday as Spain were beaten by Italy in the first semi-final game of Euro 2020.
Federico Chiesa’s second-half goal was cancelled out by Morata, but the Juventus striker made the crucial error in the shoot-out.
The first half was tightly contested, with Spain enjoying the larger share of the possession but failing to put the Italians to the sword despite their dominance.
After the first half ended barren, the Italians finally broke the deadlock; as they shot into the lead on the hour mark.
Roberto Mancini’s men broke ruthlessly in a counter-attack with Federico Chiesa finishing off masterfully.
Spain got back on level terms heading into the final ten minutes; Morata, much maligned by fans, finished superbly after being played in by Dani Olmo.
The game moved into extra time after both sides ended even after the regulation time elapsed.
This was a familiar route for Spain who had just one win in EURO 2020 after 90 minutes, as the Round of 16 with Croatia went to extra time and Switzerland were only beaten on penalties.
The two sides could not still be separated and the semi-final went to penalties, where Italy had lost both times before against Spain in EURO 2008 and the 2013 Confederations Cup.
Italy started on a shaky note in the shoot out as Manuel Locatelli’s effort was saved but Dani Olmo fired over, then Donnarumma saved Morata’s attempt and Jorginho calmly rolled in the decisive kick to send Italy into the Final.
Italy will now meet England or Denmark in the Final, also at Wembley Stadium, on Sunday
