The Jaiz Charity and Development Foundation, says it has disbursed N50 million, as Zakat (Alms) to over 838 less privileged across 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Dr Abdullahi Shu’aib, the Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Friday, in Abuja.
Shu’aib said that the imperative of disbursing Zakat was to wipe away the tears of the ordinary people, the less privileged and the needy in the society.
He said that the empowerment of the needy with zakat would build their capacity so that they could be self-sufficient and be able to give arms or charity to the needy too.
“This year, we are able to disburse Zakat two times within a year. About three months ago, precisely in April 22, we disbursed Zakat of about N6million to 137 beneficiaries.
”And this month August, we have also distributed N12.7million to 534 beneficiaries. We have also distributed Zakat in Lagos, Taraba, and Katsina States and in almost all the states of the federation.
”Put all together, we have distributed over N50 million to 838 beneficiaries across all the states of the federation,” he said.
Shu’aib, who described collection of Zakat as one of the most challenging works to do, urged eligible Muslims to strive to give Zakat in obedience to the commandment of Allah.
”When the rich give out, they are touching the lives of the poorest of the poor and the needy by taking them from poverty and making them to have a sense of self-importance and dignity.
“They should have this in mind because they will replicate same gesture to the needy in future.
”So let us increase the bar of our piety, devotion and fear of the almighty Allah. Let us also learn to give out freely because it is what you give out that is really your own portion of your wealth.
“But what you keep when you are no more, some people will use it,” he said.
NAN reports that Jaiz Charity and Development Foundation was established by Jaiz Bank Plc. on April 2, 2012.
The main objective is to manage certain types of incomes not recognised by the bank (non-permissible incomes) or the ones classified as doubtful by the Bank’s Advisory Council of Experts (ACE).
The foundation also pursued other sources of income such as Zakat obligations, endowments, donations, income from investments and grants for the sustainability of the charity. (NAN)
