EPL: Nigeria’s Onyeka Shines As Brentford Shock Arsenal
Nigeria international Frank Onyeka Friday night had a dream debut in the English Premier League as his team Brentford stunned Arsenal 2-0.
Onyeka featured for 80 minutes in the tie played at the Brentford Community Stadium as the Bees made a grand entry into the Premier League after playing all the past years in the lower ranks of English football.
It was Sergi Canos that got the opening goal for the Bees in the 22nd minute and while one would think that the Gunners will find a way back into the game, Christian Noergaard sealed victory for the host with his 73rd minute goal.
Arsenal started the game on the front foot dominating the early exchanges but Brentford could have gone in front in the 12th minute when a chance presented itself to Onyeka but his header went wide.
After seeing what the Premeir League new boys were capable of doing, Arsenal upped the tempo to pile the pressure but the hosts were solid at the back.
And while it was Arsenal that dominated the ball possession, Canos shot Brentford into the lead by beating Bernd Leno at his near post.
That goal saw the Bees in front of Arsenal with their first top-flight goal in 74 years and they held on tight to lead into the second half
Though Arsenal improved on their game with the introduction of some new players including Bukayo Saka, they saw themselves conceding another goal in the 73rd minute.
This time it was Norgaard who tapped home a loose ball from close range to give his side a two-goal cushion and ultimately victory on the light as well as crucial three points.
Though this maybe early days, the result and the performance posted by Onyeka and his Brentford teammate should give them hope that this season will be more than just a battle against relegation.
As for Arsenal, they could be heading for a more disappointing 2020/21 season.
