EFCC releases ex-governor nabbed over multi-billion Naira fraud

Former governor of Abia State, Sen. Theodore Orji has been granted a temporary reprieve by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission after initially being detained by operatives of the anti-corruption agency.

The Senator was arrested with his son Chinedu over the alleged misappropriation of almost N2 billion Ecological Fund and conversion of Sure-P funds while the former governor was in office between 2007 and 2015.

They were intercepted at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Thursday, August 19.

According to sources familiar with the case, Mr Orji was granted administrative bail after facing hours of interrogation at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja at about 9 p.m. on Thursday.

The lawmaker, currently representing Abia Central Senatorial District at the Senate was asked to return to the EFCC office for further interrogation on Friday.
