UCL: Lukaku fires Chelsea to victory, Barca suffer heavy defeat

Romelu Lukaku was the hero yet again on Tuesday night as Chelsea began their UEFA Champions League title defense with a slim 1-0 win over Zenith St. Petersburg at Stamford Bridge.

The 69th minute goal by the Belgian striker proved to be enough for the Blues to claim a crucial victory in the opening day of action in the group stage of the Champions League.

While the Blues did enough for a win , it wasn’t the same for 10-man Manchester United who were stunned 2-1 in Zurich by Young Boys.

Cristiano Ronaldo had given the Red Devils the lead in the first half but United were pegged back by the resolute Young Boys in the second half before the hosts snatched a late win after a blunder by Jesse Lingard.

At the Nou Camp, it appears life without Messi will be miserable for Barcelona as they were roundly beaten 3-0 by Bayern Munich.

Thomas Muller got the opening goal for the Bavarians before Robert Lewandowski added two more goals for the visitors.

Elsewhere, Nigeria’s Innocent Bonke was on for 75 minutes but he could not help his Swedish team Malmo who were trounced 3-0 by visiting Juventus.

Alvaro Morata, Paulo Dybala and Alex Sandro were the goal scoreres for the Italian giants.

In Spain, a late goal saw Atalanta hold Villarreal to a 2-2 but Nigerian forward Samuel Chukwueze was missing in the four goal thriller.

Action will continue in Match Day 1 of the Champions League on Wednesday.
