CAF Women’s Champions League: Rivers Angels bow out despite big win

Rivers Angels romped to a 4-0 win over Kenyan side Vihiga Queens on Friday in their last group game of the CAF Women’s Champions League.

While the win was heartwarming for the Nigeria flagbearers, it was not enough to see the Jewel of Rivers muscle thier way into the semi final stage of the new elite women’s club competition.

Administrative ineptitude which saw Rivers Angels arriving on the eve of their opening game and the recent painful loss to Mamelodi Sundowns on worked against coach Edwin Okon’s ladies.

The Jewel of Rivers suffered a heavy defeat in their opening group game to ASFAR Club of Morocco, losing 3-0 and on Tuesday night they lost to Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa by a lone goal

Those unpleasant results saw Rivers Angels coming all out to win Friday’s tie; especially as the Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Honourable Boma Iyaye had tasked players and technical crew of the state owned club to approach their last game against Vihiga Queens with great honour.

“If I say I’m not disappointed then know that I’m lying to you and myself. The results from the last two games are totally unacceptable,” he said.”However, we cannot leave this country without correcting these mistakes and the opportunity for this is on Friday when you play your last group game.”Even if we don’t qualify, we should at least go out with our heads up high and prove to naysayers that we aren’t a bad side.

ASFAR qualified ahead of Rivers Angels having done well enough to hold South African champions, Sundowns to a barren draw.
