Nigeria 1-1Cape Verde: Super Eagles seal World Cup playoff spot

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have qualified for the final playoff stage in the World Cup qualifying series.

Though Genort Rohr’s men were forced to a 1-1draw by the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde, it was enough to see them finish top in Group C and snatch the playoff ticket.

The Super Eagles started the game like a house on fire as Victor Osimhen put the team ahead within the opening two minutes.

Pairing upfront with Odion Ighalo, it was expected that an a basketful of goals was in the offing.

But that was easily put off as Stopira connected a corner kick in the seventh minute to beat a clay-footed Super Eagles defence.

From that moment, it became a dingdong affair as memory of what happened to Portugal in their World Cup qualifier with Serbia started coming up.

By half time, the Super Eagles attack had lost gas giving Cape Verde the opportunities to make initiatives.

The draw was enough for the Super Eagles. They had plenty of chances in the first half to extend their lead but Cape Verde, to their credit, stayed in the game right until the very end.

It wasn’t to be for Cape Verde, who finish second in Group C. Nigeria can now look forward to joining nine other teams in the playoffs next March for a place at Qatar 2022. Nigeria are one step closer to the World Cup!
