The absence of a Yoruba language interpreter has stalled the arraignment of Babatunde Amudat and Jamiu Oyetunji, aides of Yoruba nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo , popularly known as Sunday Igboho on Monday before a federal high court Abuja.
The Federal Government is prosecuting the defendants on a five count of terrorism, through the Department of State Service (DSS), Arise TV reports.
The charge, dated August 31, was filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, by S.M Bello, counsel for the claimant.
By the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/305/2021, the Federal Government claims that the defendants were involved in acts of terrorism and were in possession of prohibited firearms.
While in the dock, the registrar of the court asked if they understand English language, they answered in the negative.
Counsel to the defendants, Pelumi Olajengbensi, informed the court that her clients do not understand the English language but only understands the Yoruba language and need an interpreter.
Efforts by the court to get one was futile, as Justice Obiora Egwuatu , the trial judge, asked the open court if there was anyone in the court who understands Yoruba language, but did not get any response.
This situation forced Justice Obiora to adjourn the case to January 24, 2022.
