NPFL: Remo Stars start season on winning note against MFM FC
The 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League got off to a bright start on Friday as newly-promoted Remo Stars FC secured to 2-0 victory over MFM FC.
Second half goals from Qudus Akanni and Andy Okpe gave the Sky Blues a dream start to the season having failed in their two earlier tries in past seasons.
The Olukoya Boys started on the front foot as they sought for an early opening to peg back the away side.
However, the Sky Blue boys did enough to neutralize all that were thrown at them by the hosts and ensured a scoreless first half.
The second half started with MFM FC still pushing for the opening goal but it was Qudus Akanni that netted the opening goal for Remo stars in the 56th minute.
Akanni is proudly the first player to score in the 2021/22 NPFL season.
While MFM toiled hard to get back into the game, their hearts were broken in the dying moments when Andy Okpe sealed the game and made it 0-2 in favour of Remo Stars and ensured the maximum points were earned by the visitors.
Before Friday’s outing, Remo Stars had never won their first game of the season in the NPFL.
They lost to Plateau United in 2017 and in 2019 they were held to a 1-1 draw by Bendel Insurance but now they have changed the narrative with the heart-warming win over MFM FC.
