EPL Round-Up: Man City pull away as Liverpool, Chelsea drop points

Manchester City have opened a three points gap ahead of Liverpool and six ahead of Chelsea in the race for the Premier League title.

The Reds and Blues dropped points in their Sunday games in the Premier League.

While City showed ruthless form; thrashing Newcastle United 4-0 away from home, Liverpool and Chelsea could only share the spoils with Tottenham and Wolverhampton Wanderers in their respective games.

Joao Cancelo scored and set up another in City’s comprehensive win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park to extend their Premier League winning run to eight games.

His compatriot Ruben Dias had previously put City ahead early on, with Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling adding further gloss to the scoreline after the interval.

The victory ensured City will be top at Christmas, with the side topping the tree at this stage of the season having gone on to win the title in nine of the last 12 seasons.

Aside from the extra advantage they now have, Pep Guardiola’s men also set new records with Sunday’s victory.

The 4-0 victory away at Newcastle United on Sunday was City’s 34th of 2021, which eclipses the 33 Liverpool managed under the great Bob Paisley back in 1982.

With two more Premier League games – at home to Leicester and away to Brentford, City can further extend their record further.

The win at St James’ Park also saw City chalk up another significant milestone.

It was their 18th away win in the league this year, more than any other top-flight side has managed in the history of English football

For Chelsea who are now six points behind City after they could only draw 0-0 at Wolves on Sunday, they would be angry that their request to have their game postponed was declined.

This is now the third time the Blues have dropped points in their last four league games.

For Liverpool, they were held to a 2-2 draw by a resolute Tottenham Hostpur team in the Super Sunday clash.
