COVID-19: Arsenal coach tests positive
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has emerged as the latest high-profile sporting figure to test positive for Covid-19.
Arteta’s coronavirus issue is coming ahead of his side’s crunch clash with Manchester City, and he will now miss this important match.
The Spanish coach was infected with the virus in March 2020 and is now back in quarantine.
He will currently be in quarantine for a week and will test on the sixth and seventh day, which is 24 hours apart, and under the new rules, patients do not have to stay home for 10 days.
A club statement from Arsenal on Wednesday read: “Mikel Arteta will miss our match against Manchester City on New Year’s Day after testing positive for Covid-19.
“Mikel is isolating in line with Government guidelines and we wish him well.”
The 39-year-old is the third Premier League manager to be infected with the virus. Patrick Vieira and Steven Gerrard have also recently tested positive and missed their team matches.
The Premier League in England is adamant about going on with the season despite the soaring new coronavirus cases among club players and staff.
This recent case is the highest weekly number recorded since testing figures began being circulated in May last year.
The league has also confirmed it has reverted to emergency measures following a raft of top-flight postponements.
Increased testing to daily lateral flow and twice-weekly PCR tests have been introduced.
Lateral flow testing was previously carried out twice a week.
