Ondo Civil Servant Placed On Suspension For Spreading Fake News Of Akeredolu’s Death
A sledge hammer has fallen on a civil servant who was believed to be one of the people peddling rumour about death of Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.
The governor was rumoured to have died over the weekend as residents of the state were thrown into a state of panic.
Less Than 24 hours after the information went viral on social media, the chief Press Secretary to the governor, Richard Olatunde released a video recorded by the governor in Germany that countered the death rumour.
In the video, Akeredolu was praising God with a song which was posted on the Facebook page of the media aide. Two days after, the governor returned to the state from Germany where he was said to be on medical vacation.
On Tuesday, the Ondo State Head of Service, Pastor John Adeyemo announced in Akure that a civil servant who was among the people that posted the fake news on their social media page has been suspended.
Adeyemo who did not reveal the name of the officer said the disciplinary measure was based on the death rumour being peddled about the Governor. He also said his name has been forwarded to the Civil Service Commission for appropriate discipline.
He explained that the officer posted the fake news on his Facebook account, adding that such bad behavior would not be condoned.
He suggested severe sanctions against purveyors of such fake news to serve as deterrent to others, stressing that fake news creates problems in the society.
Adeyemo also expressed joy that the governor is back to the country hale and hearty, saying God has shamed the rumour mongers and their sponsors.
