The death of a foremost Yoruba Monarch, Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi hit the media space like a thunderstorm on Saturday morning.

The monarch who died at 83 was said to have been the longest reigning Alaafin in the history of Oyo town, having reigned for 53 years on the throne.

Oba Lamidi died at Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti on Friday, a few months after Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji and Soun of Ogbomso, Oba Jimoh Oyewumi died. They all died within a space of five months.

According to a family source, Oba Adeyemi had been sick for a while and plans were already in the pipeline to fly him out of the country for medical attention.

The source disclossed that the traveling visa had been procured for the monarch as well as a few of his wives scheduled to go on that trip with him. Also, their boarding tickets had reportedly been bought.

He was scheduled to embark on the trip by early next week. But by Friday night, his health became complicated and deteriorated. All attempts by medical personnels to stabilize him for the trip proved futile. He gave up the ghost late in the night.

His remains was brought to Oyo town on Saturday morning which marked the commencement of the traditional rite.
