Gas, not oil, is the future of Nigeria – GMD NNPC

The Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Mr. Mele Kari has revealed that the Corporation is shifting its focus from an oil-based economy to a gas driven economy in order to rise to the challenges of industrialization.

He explained that the efficient management and deployment of Gas for industrial and domestic purposes has been identified as a major catalyst for sustainable growth and development in Nigeria.

Mr. Kyari spoke weekend during an interactive session with members of the Energy Reporters in Abuja, FCT.

He said gas and not oil, has the potential to accelerate the industrialization and full commercialization of the economy of the country.

Among others, he said the total focus on a gas-driven economy has the potential to create more employment and bring about sustainable development to the country.

“We are more of a gas producing country than we are a petroleum-driven country.

“Therefore, our new focus on gas development is critical to the sustenance of our economy.

“Gas creates work and opportunities to power the country.

“Our shift to gas as a country will produce more profit and bring us more dividends than the focus on petroleum, he said.

The GMD also said that gas will benefit the nation both for domestic and industrial purposes:

“We need gas to generate energy to power our nation for domestic and non-domestic purposes.

“When the potential of gas is fully utilised, it will stimulate our efforts and have manifold impact on our industrialization drive.

“So we need to deepen the utilization and monetization of gas.

“Our reasons to shift from oil to gas are compelling hence our projection to cross the River Niger with gas pipelines by the end of December 2020 remains on course despite the challenges of the global COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.
