As Defection Rumour Swirls, Here Are Conditions SDP Gives Tinubu, Others Before Admission
The Social Democratic Party has issued a strong condition to politicians who are considering it as plan B for their political ambition ahead of 2023 general elections.
Notable among them is the former governor of Lagos and APC presidential aspirant who is rumoured to be making moves to defect to SDP in a situation where he failes to clinch the APC ticket at the primary.
Acting National Chairman of the SDP, Chief Supo Shonibare, stated in a chat with newsmen on the sidelines of the party’s congress held in Lagos that the party will not admit politicians with questionable characters or tainted integrity.
Shonibare disclosed that certain key condition must be met before anyone is allowed to join the party.
He revealed that the party won’t welcome;
- People who have been convicted (Ex-convicts)
- People with pending cases in Court.
In his words; “We won’t welcome people who have been convicted even if they say they are appealing against the conviction, we won’t welcome people with pending cases even if the case has not been determined.
“If, prima facie, we look at their matter and we see that there are allegations against them that are waiting, because we have a committee consisting of lawyers, if they look at the allegations, particularly when the charge has been proffered, and the person has not been convicted, we will not wish to push people like that as our flag bearers in the face of indictment..”
He added that the party was widely accepted by Nigerians and currently being seen as an alternative to both the APC and PDP.
