2 Reasons APC, PDP Are The Only Parties With Chances Of Winning 2023 Presidential Election

Regardless of quality of candidates, Nigerians are likely going to witness another reign of president from either the platform of the People’s Democratic Party or the All Progressive Congress in the next political dispensation.

The two leading parties are gradually returning into a familiar terrain where they will slug it out with one another on who occupies the Aso Rock in 2023.

Since 2014 that APC came into the political limelight, contest for the Nigeria’s plum job has always been two horse race between the two parties.

President Muhammadu Buhari after emerging as APC candidate challenged the then president Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 and won the election.

In 2019, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP ran against the incumbent president Buhari and lost. This time, Atiku has again emerged as the presidential Flagbearer of the opposition party and will face whoever wins APC presidential primaries slated for Monday.

As things stand presently, candidate from either of the parties may be the one to lead Nigeria for another four years irrespective of the qualities of candidates coming out from other political parties.

One of the reasons it will be difficult for any other party aside APC or PDP to win election is the political structures. The two leading parties are the most structured parties in Nigeria as at today.

And as it is said, politics is local and it is about structure. Any party that has no good structure always find it difficult to win at the centre.

It is on this basis that Nigerians should not expect much from the likes of Peter Obi, Kingsley Moghalu and other presidential candidates who are perceived to be technocrats and have the capacity to take the country to the next level.

As at today, the Labour Party under which Dr Peter Obi is contesting has no elective officer anywhere in the country.

Before such a party can build structures that can win presidential election in Nigeria, it will take time. It is not something to be achieved overnight.

The second reason is the numerical strength of the two Parties. APC being a ruling party is alleged to boast of over fourty million members. It has the highest party members because of its position as a ruling party.

PDP which is the strongest opposition party takes the second layer in terms of numerical strength. The two parties have a good number of party members that can swing the pendulum to any side on election day.

Going by the acclaimed number of members in APC compared to the registered number of voters in Nigeria, it will be easy to foretell the outcome of the poll even before it is conducted.

In other words, it is only APC and PDP that have what it takes to win election at such a big stage regardless of the kind of candidates they produce for Nigeria.
