When you talk of a state that has a visible presence of Amotekun operatives in the southwest, it is Ondo State. This is largely due to the attention given to the scheme by the state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.
As a matter of fact, Akeredolu is currently the grand commander of the security operatives in the region and it activities have been quite successful in Ondo State since it was launched in 2020.
But on Sunday, dare-devil terrorists invaded an ancient city of the state and wrecked a monumental havoc on the entire State.
Scores of people were reportedly killed in the attack that happened at St Francis Catholic Church, Owo as gunmen stormed the church towards the end of Sunday service and opened fire on defenseless worshipers.
The attack has been widely condemned by Nigerians across the country.Reacting to the incident on Monday edition of Arise News Morning Show, a PDP senatorial candidate, Akogun Tokunbo Modupe who is also from Owo described the situation as devastating.
According to him, the city of Owo is currently deserted because no one knows what happens next.
Asked why Amotekun operatives did not show up during the attack, the businessman turned politician explained that the situation is beyond the reach of Amotekun officers.
He noted that Amotekun is not trained and designed to counter terrorists. The gunmen who invaded the church on Sunday were armed with sophisticated weapons such as AK-47, pump rifle and the rest.
He stated that Amotekun officers are not licensed to carry AK-47. The kind of gun they are permitted to carry cannot withstand what the terrorists are carrying except they deliberately want to waste their lives.
He however advised the federal government to make the creation of state police a top priority. This is the only way to address the problem of insecurity.Tokunbo explained on Arise TV.
