What Happened In Owo Confirmed The Fundermental Flaws In The Security System- Olu Falae

Chief Oluyemi Falae, former Nigeria’s Minister of Finance has reacted to the massacre that occured in Owo, Ondo State on Sunday.

The incident which reportedly claimed over 50 lives with several people injured has continued to dominate the public discussion in the last three days.

Responding to the incident on the Tuesday edition of Arise TV Morning Show, Olu Falae who condemned the gruesome attack on innocent worshippers attributed it to the deteriorating state of security in the country.

According to the elderstatesman, what happened on Sunday in Owo is a confirmation of the fundermental flaws that have been existing in the security system.

The former SDP presidential candidate noted that the structure of the current police force cannot prevent such an attack from happening or counter it when it’s already happening.

Falae explained that concentration of security apparatus at the centre is one of the major challenges being faced in the country. He said the police force needs to be brought down to the state and local level.

Speaking further, the Akure based politician stated that if states were to be given the privilege of running the police affairs, it would have been easy to properly equipped the police and mobilize them to crime scene immediately.

In Owo, the distance between police station and St Francis Catholic Church is less than 2kilometres. It was reported that police were contacted when the gunmen struck but they didn’t show up until they left after operating for about 30 minutes in the church.

Falae believed that if the police were to be under the state government, they will respond promptly because they will know that someone will question them why it took them long to respond to the distress situation.

He noted that until police are localised through the creation of state Police, it will be difficult to nip this kind of crime in the bud.

He advised the federal government to revisit the report of 2014 National confab where solutions were proferred to the current problems confronting the nation.

Falae who said the solution is not a  constitutional amendment, disclosed that until report of national confab is implemented, there won’t be solution to the present situation because it is a fundermental flaws.

Falae spoke on Arise TV from Akure, Ondo State capital.
