Updated: Why It Will Be Difficult For Nigeria’s Govt To Intervene In Ekweremadu’s Saga -Adegboruwa
Human Right Lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ebun Olu-Adegboruwa has explained reasons Nigeria’s government may not intervene in the current legal battle between the Senate deputy president, Ike Ekweremadu and British Government.
Ekweremadu was arrested with his wife on Thursday at the Eathrow Airport by metropolitan Police for alleged organ harvesting.
Ekweremadu and his wife were said to be traveling to the UK with a kidney donor to their daughter, Sonia who was critically ill and seriously need a kidney transplanting.
The couple were arrested, taken to court and later denied bail which consequently landed them in custody till July 7 when the case will be decided in court.
Speaking on the development during the Friday edition of Channels TV Sunrise Daily, the senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ebun Olu-Adegboruwa explained certain reasons the Nigerian government cannot intervene in the situation despite Ekweremadu being the deputy Senate president.
According to the legal luminary, Ekweremadu did not follow the due processes before embarking on the trip. There are necessary documentations he needed to have done which he didn’t do.
Ordinarily, there is no offence in trying to traffic an organ donor to either US, UK, Germany or any other part of the world but there are laid down procedures that need to be followed.
As a matter of fact, the information ought to have got to the host country before the people involved get there. There should have been a medical report from a reputable hospital in Nigeria that will be attached to the donor passport submitted to the embassy.
It is from the UK embassy that the information will be escalated to the immigration office both in Nigeria and the UK.
But unfortunately, Ekweremadu didn’t follow this process and that was why he landed in trouble. Before Nigeria’s government can intervene, all these documents that show that the senator did the right thing must be available.
The fact that Ekweremadu has a diplomatic passport does not mean he can get away with anything he does. There is a foreign policy and diplomatic relations between Nigeria and UK that need to be respected.
Nigerian government will not break the relationship in order to get Ekweremadu out of his predicament he could have easily avoided if he had done the right thing.
Ebun Olu-Adegboruwa explained this on Friday edition of Channels TV Sunrise Daily.
