Tems Becomes First Nigerian Female To Win Best International Act At BET Awards 2022

Nigerian Music artiste, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, made history on Sunday night, as she not only emerged winner of the Best International Act at the BET Awards for the year 2022, but also became the first African woman to win in that category.

The talented singer, songwriter and record producer was nominated with many other talented artistes like Fireboy, Dinos from France, Dave from the UK, Little Simz also from the UK, Fally Ipupa from Congo, Major League Djz from South Africa amongst many others.

This happens to be the first international award Tems is receiving for her own record while for the night, she received an award for her record with Wizkid and Justin Bieber.

While receiving the award, Tems spoke, urging women and girls to continue on their chosen path, stating clearly that sooner than later, hard work will pay off.

Tems Speaks At The Awards Ceremony

In her words, she said, “Thank you so much for this, thank you so much. It’s an honour… I mean, this is my first award show that I’m winning something and I just want to use this as an opportunity to speak to every single young, old, whatever, every single woman watching this, every single girl watching this at home. Where I’m from, things like this don’t happen.”

The BET Awards celebrates Black excellence in music, culture and sports and that of the year 2022 took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, which had the attendance and performance of talented artistes like Pheelz and Firebox DML and many others.

Asides Tems, other Nigerian artistes who have won the Best International Act include 2Baba, D’banj, Ice Prince, Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy.
