Breaking News: President Buhari orders immediate re-opening of land borders.

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the re-opening of four land borders in the country. This follows a promise made by the President earlier in December that the borders will be re-opened as soon as possible.

The pronouncement was made by the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, at the end of the virtual Federal Executive Council, FEC meeting which was presided over by the vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo.

The re-opened borders include the popular Seme in the southwest, which is a major gateway to neighbouring west African countries, Illela in Sokoto State, Maigatari in the northwest, and Mfun in the south-south.

According to the information, President Buhari also directed that other land borders are to be opened by December 31, 2020.

It would be recalled that the President closed the nation’s borders in August 2019 as part of efforts to checkmate rising terrorism in the country by controlling the smuggling of weapons and drugs into the country through the borders. The action that did not go down well with the leadership of some neighbouring countries.
