Lagos-Abeokuta Road: I Don’t Know Where Gov. Abiodun’s Power To Take Over A Federal Road Will Come From- Fashola

Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola has reacted to the decision taken by the Ogun State governor on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.

The road which has been in a terrible state for years has continued to attract outrages from several Nigerians especially users of the roads.

It was reported that the road which is a federal government project has claimed several lives due to its horrible state.

Many vehicles are constantly trapped in its traffic as residents of the area daily lament their hopelessness on the situation.

It was on this basis that the state governor, Dapo Abiodun declared a state of emergency on the road and promised to take up the construction if the federal government refused to do something about it.

Reacting to Abiodun’s step on the Sunday edition of Channels TV Politics Today, Babatunde Raji Fashola said he does not know where the governor’s power to take over the construction of federal road will come from.

He said there are processes to go through before such a decision can be taken. It will involve the transferring of some documents from the federal government to the Ogun state government and agreement has to be reached between the two parties.

According to Fashola, the road has already been included in the federal government budget and it is not something a governor can just wake up and embark on.

Similarly, the cost of constructing the road is about 56 billion naira and he doesn’t know where the governor can raise such an amount to start a federal government project when there are other states roads he fix.

Fashola however assured Nigerians especially people of Ogun State that the federal government is not sleeping over the situation. He said he is in touch with Governor Abiodun and they are working something out on it.
