Workers storm Gombe govt house over unpaid wages

By Tolulope Popoola

In what seems like a protest against holding back to people’s entitlements, staff members of the Gombe State Environmental Protection Agency, have stormed the Gombe State Government House, over alleged unpaid 3 months wages.

According to reports, the protesters were seen walking from the Terminus Roundabout to the Government House with placards and green leaves, an act which is no longer new in the state.

It could be recalled that in April 2022, a similar protest of this nature took place as the cleaners claimed that they were being owed, even in the face of rumours hat they would be replaced under a new management. Like that wasn’t enough, the cleaners added that before the latest arrangement, they were short-changed by their previous management.

Few workers who pleaded anonymity before speaking with newsmen stated that Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, in his recent media chat, claimed to have released all pending payments.

In the words of the protesters, “for over three months we have been working without our pay, we have wives, children, and bills to pay. It is not true that we have been paid as claimed by Governor Yahaya,” the protesters disclosed.

The General Manager, GOSEPA, Muhammad Kumo, who refused to issue an official statement, arrived almost immediately and tried to quell the protest and promised to look into the issue while pleading with the protesters to disperse.
