What I Would Do To End Banditry If I Was Chief Of Defense Staff- Federal Lawmaker Reveals

Honorable Jimi Benson, the Chairman Federal House of Representatives Committee on Defense has revealed what he would do to bring banditry to an end if he was the Chief of Defense Staff.

The lawmaker was a special guest on Friday edition of Channels TV Politics Today where he was made to answer several questions on the ongoing security Crisis across the country.

It could be recalled that badits have been invading states and communities around the Federal Capital Territory and they were also said to have gained entry into the FCT launching attacks on residents.

While reacting to the ugly development, Honourable Benson decried the terrible security situation and lamented that the present government has not really done enough to put an end to the scourge.

He explained that the Nigerian Army is currently exhausted and oversused. Ordinarily, they are not the ones who should be saddled with the responsibilities of fighting the insecurity within the country.

Their primary responsibility is to defend the country against external aggression. But as it is, they are fighting the battle they are not trained to fight. He expects that Nigerian police should have been more fortified and made to partner with other security agencies to fight the Insurgents.

But they are under-equipped, poorly remunerated and psychologically unprepared for this kind of assignment. That is why it seems the Bandits are getting bolder and gaining more grounds by the day.

The Lawmaker disclosed that if he was Chief of Defense Staff, the best thing he would have done at this juncture is to go for machineries. He would get experts from developed countries to support the Nigerian security.

He said it is not presently advisable to purchase fighting weapons because the country does not have the financial capacity. The exchange rate is not smiling and if such a decision is taken, it will take a long time before it gets to Nigeria.

So the best way to address the present situation is to hire machineries. And if he was the Defense Chief, that is what he would rightly do.

Honourable Jimi Benson disclosed this on Friday edition of Channels TV Politics Today.
