Gunshots As Violent Clashes Rock Lagos on Monday

Two separate violent clashes have been reported across two locations in Lagos on Monday.

As reported by the Vanguard Newspapers, what began as a minor clash between Hausa motorcyclists and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, in the Iyana-Iba area of Ojo, Lagos, quickly degenerated into a tribal clash, early Monday morning,

It was reported that Hausa and Yoruba youths confronted one another, wielding dangerous weapons.

The fracas according to eyewitnesses began when Hausa motorcyclists gathered in large numbers to protest constant harassment by the road union members, after a Hausa motorcyclist was allegedly beaten up and stabbed to death.

Though the Lagos state government through the Chief Press Secretary Gboyega Akosile has not denied there was a fracas, he has refuted insinuations it was a tribal clash between Hausas and Yorubas.

On his Twitter handle, Akosile wrote: Correction: please there’s no ethnic clash in Lagos. No State has been more tolerant in Nigeria, where you have every tribe from the country than Lagos. The early morning clash was between members of the NURTW and the Okada riders. @PoliceNG has brought situation under control.

Similarly, there was also a reported case of clashes between motorcyclists and law enforments agencies along the Lekki-Ajah axis.

The details are still sketchy at the time of this report…
