ASUU Strike: If We Resume Today, We Can’t Go For Leave For The Next 4 Years – ASUU President

The implication of the ongoing face off between the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal Government does not seem to be limited to the classroom activities and future of the Nigeria’s students, the lecturers who are at the centre of the controversy are also not spared.

According to Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, the president of the aggrieved Union, if the crisis is resolved today and the lecturers return to the classroom, there is going to be heavy pressure on them to deliver within the academic timeline.

Speaking on the Monday edition of Channels TV Politics Today, Professor Osodeke stated that if the academic activities resume today, the lecturers will not be able to go for their annual leave four the next for years.

He maintained that once they resume, there are backlog of academic activities and assignments that are already waiting for them. They will have to cover 2021 and 2022 academic calendar for the students within a short space of time.

After that, the 2022 and 2023 academic session is also there for them to cover. There are researches, and several other things to do.

Professor Osodeke explained that the lecturers are the ones who will bear more of the burdens of the strike than the students who are at home. Before things can take a normal shape after the strike is called off, it will take the next four to five years.

That is when they can begin to go on their annual leave. He said this is due to the numbers of months they have already wasted in trying to get the federal government to reason with them over their demands.

The university professor believed that the federal government has what it takes to meet their demands and bring them back to the classroom but it is obvious that education is not a priority for this administration and that is why the economy is currently in shamble at the moment.

Professor Osodeke stated this on Monday edition of Channels TV Politics Today.
