If I Were PDP Candidate, I Wouldn’t Sleep A Day After Seeing Politicians Visiting Wike In P/Harcourt- Dr. Sam Ohuabunwa

Dr. Sam Ohabunwa, the former presidential aspirant under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party is one the many leaders of the party who is currently not happy with the way the crisis rocking the major opposition party is being handled.

Ohuabunwa who appeared as a special guest on the Tuesday edition of Channels TV Politics Today believes that if care is not taken with the way things are going, PDP may have no option than to return to the drawing board after the 2023 presidential election.

Dr. Sam contested the party’s primary in May and lost to Atiku Abubakar like other aspirants. But he swallowed his loss almost immediately and moved on with life. Others like Nyesom Wike are still fighting tooths and nails to prove a point.

The Rivers Governor is not actually contesting the outcome of the primary but he seems to be fighting to retain his relevance in the party after he was also denied the vice presidential slot. Wike has been creating ripples in the party since he lost both the ticket and vice presidential slot and he doesn’t seem ready to back down until certain conditions are met.

Parts of his conditions is for the party national chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu to step down for a Southerner to take over.

Speaking on the lingering crisis within the party, Dr Sam Ohuabunwa expressed his disappointment and described PDP as party that seems not ready to win the next presidential election.

What is really lacking is the adequate conflict resolution capacity within the party. The party Chieftain who said PDP is bleeding explained that what is happening in the party should not have been something serious if it was handled the way it should. It should not have been allowed to fester like this.

According to him, once a candidate emerges as party Flagbearer, the next thing that is expected of him is to bring all the aggrieved parties together and make a genuine reconciliation. This is what he expected Atiku Abubakar to have done immediately he was declared the party standard bearer.

He noted that if he were to be the presidential candidate, he would not be able to sleep for one night after seeing governors and leaders of other political parties coming to visit Governor Wike in Port Harcourt.

He expected that moves to send a dangerous signal to Atiku and push him to take an action. Dr. Ohuabunwa wonders how Atiku sleeps at night with the kind of problem he has in the party.

Also speaking on Iyorchia Ayu’s position,  Ohuabunwa said the party national chairman ought to have toed the path of honour. His reason for continually occupying the position is unexplainable.

If that is what will bring peace to the party, the chairman should be able to make that sacrifice in the interest of fairness and equity
