Super Falcons suffer defeat again, but break 20-years jinx against USA
Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered yet another defeat in a friendly game against the United States of America on Tuesday. The match ended 2-1.
However, the African team broke a 20-year-jinx of not recording a goal against the Americans.
It was victory as usual for the United States’ women’s team against African opposition as they extended their unbeaten run to seven games. They’ve also extended their unbeaten streak at home to 71 matches.
The Americans took the lead through a Tosin Demehin’s own goal in the 24th minute, but second half substitute, Uchenna Kanu scored the equaliser in the 50th minute before Rose Lavelle’s header shot the US back into the lead in the 66th minute.
The Super Falcons pushed for an equaliser but didn’t get it as they fell to a second defeat to the United States on their American tour.
Most games between both sides have ended in narrow scorelines with last weekend’s 4-0 loss one of the highest ever recorded.
The Super Falcons, after finishing 4th at the last WAFCON, will be at next year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand as one of Africa’s four already settled representatives.
United States have now defeated Nigeria five times and South Africa two times.
