Our People Are Now Running Away Through The Forest- Residents Laments Obaship Tussle In Ogun Community
Agosasa, a town in Ipokia local government area of Ogun state is currently boiling over who will become the next king of the town.
After the death of the former Monarch, Oba James Elegbede, the Oja of Agosasa in February 2022, the stool has remained vacant since then.
The tension over who will take over became rife as the youths of the community threaten to reject any form of imposition of an unpopular candidate on the people.
According to Daily Post report, the Youths reportedly took to the streets on Sunday to reiterate their warning against the imposition. A politician in the town who is believed to be a close ally of the state governor and APC Chieftain, Otunba Akeem Adigun was said to be making plans to install his candidate as the next Oja of Ipokia.
The move was however said to have elicited a protest from the youths who took to the Streets on Sunday. During the protest, about five persons were reportedly injured in the face off that greeted the demonstration.
It was gathered that it took the intervention of police and soldiers to manage the situation.
The situation reportedly got out of hand on Monday evening when one Nafiu Amosun was shot dead in the town. This triggered an angry protest among the Youths.
In the process, two more people were reportedly killed while several houses and vehicles were set abalze. Houses of those who are perceived to be loyalists of the canadiate to be imposed and the APC Chieftain planning to impose him were attacked and set abalze.
The entire community billowed with smokescreen of riot and confusion.
A resident of the town who spoke to Daily Post correspondent said the town has now become a ghost town, everyone is leaving through the forest to avoid being killed. He said police and soldiers have taken over the town.
“At the moment, Agosasa is like a ghost town with a heavy presence of soldiers and policemen. Residents are indoors as those who could flee are already on their way out of the town. Some are running away through the forest. It is getting out of hand,” The resident said.Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi described the incident as a sad occurrence.
Oyeyemi warned that people should not take laws into their hands for any reason.
He said the Obaship tussle should have been left for the court to address, saying we don’t need to shed blood because of the Oba title.
“If everyone in the town had been killed before the installation, who will the new king rule over? Its not worth it. Nobody’s ambition is worth the blood of anybody. We should learn how to address issues legally instead of toeing the path of violence. It doesn’t pay anybody,” he advised.
