Ogun Community Laments Drug Users’ Terror, Seeks Help

Landlords, residents, and business owners have raised the alarm over the existing threats to their lives and property over the activities of drug users.

The drug addicts are accused of causing unrest at a location close to the abandoned Mayas Hotel, Sabo community, in the Abeokuta North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The community members, while appealing to the state government and security agencies to apprehend drug users causing chaos in the area, said the suspects, while under the influence of hard drugs, usually engaged in street fights.

They also raised concern that drug users, who were said to be teenagers within the age range of 12 and 17, usually gathered at the location close to the abandoned hotel.

Our correspondent gathered that despite policemen clamping down on their activities in the area, the drug users usually regrouped at the location to continue their illicit act.

A leader in Sabo community, Yusuf Kamorudeen, said the threats posed by the continued presences of the drug users in the community had been sending shivers down the spines of residence.

He said, “We are tired of having these boys in our community. After they have smoked what is beyond their brain, they will start misbehaving and disturbing the peace of the community.

“We live closer to where they take their hard drugs. So, we are always the first point of contact when they start fighting. As young as they are, many of them belong to one cult group or their other.

“They keep bringing their cult issues to the community. I remember there was a time one of these cult guys was killed around the railway side. This is a threat to our community, and we can’t do anything about it.”

Another resident, Abass Babalola, urged the government to come to their aid, claiming that whenever the drug users start misbehaving in the community, they usually took advantage of the unrest to rob residents of their valuables.

He said, “Many members of this community and other adjoining communities have been robbed while passing through the Sabo road that connects us with the location of the drug users.

“So, people should speak out when they see something like that. And as they are informing us, they should inform the NDLEA too.”

According to reports, the police command in the state, in January 2021, raided the location of the drug and recovered N2,722,750 and hard drugs worth several millions of naira.
