‘The ruling is unfair’ – ASUU to appeal court order to call off strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities says it will appeal a court ruling ordering the immediate call off of the ongoing strike.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14, 2022 to demand for improved funding for universities and a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.

The federal government had sued ASUU to court after several meetings with the union ended in deadlock.

The government through its counsel, James Igwe prayed the National Industrial Court for an interlocutory injunction restraining ASUU from taking further steps as regards the strike, pending the determination of the substantive suit.

Justice Polycarp Hamman held that the application was meritorious and deserved to be granted by the court.

“The balance of convenience tilts in favour of the applicant. I hold that this application is meritorious and this application is granted,” Justice Hamman ruled.

But in its reaction, ASUU says it will appeal the court ruling.

In a tweet seen by RovingNaija on Thursday, ASUU said the “ruling is deemed unfair and our lawyer if filing an appeal and stay of execution “.
