Truck Crushes 60-Year-Old Woman To Death, Residents Blame Louts
A yet-to-be identified 60-year-old woman has been crushed to death at First Gate Bus Stop along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
The accident, which occurred around 3pm on Thursday, involved an Iveco truck with number plate YKS466YY, when the truck driver, Ibrahim Musa, lost control of the brakes, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and hit the culvert, where the victim sat.
An eyewitness identified as Abdulraheem Ayinde, told newsmen that some hoodlums extorting money from truck drivers caused the accident.
He said, “They hit the trailer driver with stick and the driver lost control then ran into the woman where she was seated begging for money.”
A Facebook user, identified as Sylvester Jacinta, stated that the hoodlums spiked the truck tyres.
She wrote, “Agbero (hoodlums) were trying to stop the truck as usual; they put something that deflated the tyre and the driver lost control. He was trying to use the curb to stop his truck and unfortunately the woman’s legs were crushed to pieces and she died.”
Another Facebook user, Abdulraheem Ayinde, said, “It was really a tough scene today; we hope the Lagos State Government does something about this agberos (hoodlums) collecting money from trailer drivers on highways.
“We know that Agbero has the backing of the government, but we are pleading with the state government to please do something about those Agbero. They should stop beating drivers on the steering wheel.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, adding that the truck driver had been arrested.
He said, “It happened today at First Gate, along Lagos-Badagry Expressway. An Iveco truck lost control. The victim was sitting on the culvert when she was hit by the truck. The driver has been arrested; the corpse has been deposited in a mortuary.”
