Trouble looms in Lagos as Peter Obi, Tinubu’s supporters plan mass rally on October 1

There may be trouble on Saturday, October 1, 2022 as two main opposition political party parties supporters plan to hold mass rallies in Lagos.

October 1 is Nigeria’s Independence Day, with official activities already lined up by federal government. As it is the tradition, president Muhammadu Buhari will make a nationwide broadcast, his last as the number one citizen.

However, a day that is supposed to be marked with celebrations following Nigeria’s freedom from colonial masters in 1960, may be full of chaos as supporters of Labour Party (LP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) may clash.

The LP rally is being planned to hold at the Lekki Tollgate, the epicentre of the #EndSARS rally, among other venues, which rocked the state and other parts of Nigeria in 2020, according to Daily Trust.

The proposed LP rally is generating tension in Lagos as the supporters of the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, are planning a counter-rally.

Both are said to be working round the clock to stage the counter rally amidst fear and apprehension over a possible breakdown of law and order in the state.

Already some lawyers loyal to Tinubu, who is a former governor of the state, have filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Lagos to stop LP, its candidates, and supporters from holding the rally tagged, “#Obidatti23 Forward Ever Rally”.

The motion for the injunction is to be heard today (Wednesday) by Justice Daniel Osiagor, who fixed the date last week after taking arguments from the parties on the mode of service of court processes, among others.
