I Was Contacted To Be Obi’s VP But Declined- Ex-Sokoto Deputy Gov. Gives Reasons For Turning Down A Juicy Offer
Former deputy governor of Sokoto State, Mukhtar Shagari has revealed reason he decided to turn down his nomination as running mate to the Labour Party presidential candidate, Dr. Peter Obi.
The Sokoto born politician made this known while featuring on the Tuesday edition of Channels TV Politics Today where he was made to respond to questions bothering on 2023 and where he is currently pitching his tent among the 18 presidential candidates jostling to succeed president Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.
Speaking on why he refused to be Peter Obi’s running mate when he was contacted by leaders of the Labour Party, Shagari noted that he declined the offer because he knew Peter Obi cannot win the election in 2023.
According to him, the Labour party contacted him and requested if he would like to be the Vice Presidential candidate to Peter Obi. He explained that when he looked at the political scenario, and the structure of the Party, he made up his mind that he cannot be Obi’s running mate.
He said he does not see the path through which Peter Obi will win the election in this country.
“It is so clear that in areas in the South-East, and young people are shouting about him on social media – yes, it’s politics.
“But the truth of the matter is that there are two dominant parties in this country – APC and PDP. If you want to become President, I think you must belong to one of them.”
Shagari also said zoning is not a constitutional matter as it is not provided in the nation’s constitution.
“it’s purely a party affair,” he said.
