I was Only Following Wike Because Of Our Friendship- G-5 Governor Backs Off, Declares Support For Atiku

As 2023 inches closer by the day, the aggrieved governors under the People’s Democratic Party appear to be sinking deeper into their self-inflicted crisis.

Amidst the tense disagreement over who to support for the presidential election among the governors, one of them had reportedly met with the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar and declared his readiness to support him in 2023.

The G5 governor who is from the South-East region was said to have visited the former vice president at his private residence in Abuja a few days ago and assured him of his loyalty.

According to a report published by the Punch Newspaper, the unidentified governor reportedly said he was only fraternising with Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, who is the face of the G5, ‘because of their friendship and what he had benefited from him’.

The G5 consists of PDP governors – Wike; Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde; Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu; Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom; and Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi – who said they are unhappy with the same-region domiciliation of the presidential candidacy and National Chairman position.

Punch quotes a source privy to the visit as saying, “The governor went to Abuja. He told the former VP that he would work for him and the PDP, saying he was following Wike because of their friendship and what he had benefited from him.

“He also said he would never work for any other candidate or political party apart from the PDP and Atiku.”
